105 Km with 1,985 metres of climbing
After breakfast, you will have the opportunity to get your own bike ready, or if rented, we will ensure the bike fit is comfortable for you.
We waste no time in tackling some of Girona’s famous climbs and we start our week with Rocacorba - taking its name from the 12th century Santuari de Rocacorba. The climb is 20km north of Girona at the top of Puigsou, the highest mountain in the provence at 991m. We leave Girona and have a 60km warm up with some gentle rolling terrain before we hit the 10.7Km climb, which averages at 6.9% with ramps of up to 15%.
Monday: 2nd Ride: Coast Loop 120
120 Km with 1,800 metres of climbin
We start our second ride and head south out of Girona into the countryside, with a 25km warm up before we hit our first climb at Massis de les Cadiretes, a 7km climb with just 300m of elevation. After enjoying the coastal views from the top, we head down a 4km descent to the coast. We hug the coastline for 16km and admire the beautiful Costa Brava coastline before heading back west towards Girona. We cycle through the peaceful countryside to reach back at our hotel in Girona.
Tuesday: 3rd Ride: St Hilari 125
127 Km with 2,000 metres of climbing
Today's ride features a steady climb up to St Hilari, which starts at Santa Coloma. This ride is the perfect climb for building up your endurance. At 19km long with an average of just 3.4%, it allows you to deliver a nice steady pace. The climb does have segments of over 10% but are short lived.
On arrival to St Hilari, a delicious cafe stop and a fountain serving fresh cold water is on tap for your pleasure. What goes up must come down and you get to enjoy 14km of descent, watch out for the sharp corners coming down.
We start climbing again and tackle a steep climb of 10% for 0.7km but an average of 6.7% for just under 4km; over into a parallel valley and the Panta de Susqueda (Susqueda Dam) which covers the area that once used to contain the town of Susqueda - which you might see signs of if the water level is really low.
The rest of the journey to Girona is the old favourite, ever descending, Llemena valley road, through Sant Gregori and back to Girona.
Wednesday: Rest day and Spa session
Optional 30 km self-guided leg stretch ride in fairy-tale lanes with 500 metres of climbing
Everyone deserves a rest and a chance to take in the sights of Girona on foot or relax around the hotel and enjoy the Spa. However, if you fancy stretching he legs, we can provide you with GPX and information for a self-guided ride if desired.
Thursday: 4th Ride: Sea Otter Europe Gran Fondo World Tour
160 Km with 1,894 metres of climbing
The Sea Otter Europe is an annual event in Girona featuring 1,700+ riders of all different levels. It’s a must for your 2019 Calendar. We get the chance to ride this epic route, featuring 5 climbs over 160Km. Although some of the climbs are steep, the scenery is awesome and descents are rewarding. This is a ride that showcases what Girona is all about.
Friday: 5th Ride: Mare de Deu del Mont
120 Km with 2194 metres of climbing
Our final ride is a very special ride that features one of the longest climbs in the area, Mare de Deu del Mont. The summit is situated just 47Km north of Girona.
Mare de Deu del Mont is an excellent cycling climb in the Catalan Pyrenees. The gradients are gentle on average, but there are steeper sections throughout the climb - particularly in the last 2km which ramp to 14% but very short sections.
The climb from Cabanelles is a long and mostly gentle climb to a sanctuary and is an enjoyable climb on quiet roads into the picturesque Alta Garrotxa mountains. The lower part is mostly in trees, but the scenery opens up towards the top, with some spectacular views.
The rest of the ride back to Girona is a fantastic 17Km descent followed by a relatively gentle 40Km stretch back to Girona.
All good things must come to an end, well for now anyway. So after breakfast, we say our goodbyes until next time, and transfer you back to Girona airport for your journey home.
