Stage 1: El Berro to Gebas
On-Bike Statistics: 25 (Km), 500 (M) elevation
We provide a warm up ride as an introduction to this epic 146km mountain bike challenge; starting from the picturesque village of El Berro, which is situated to the east of Espuna and finishes at Gebas. We ride through the beautiful green forest of Sierra Espuña, La Muela and then head into the amazing ravines known as the badlands of Los Barrancos de Gebas, in the municipality of Alhama de Murcia.
Our journey starts along La Senda del Agua in Sierra Espuña Park. Then, crossing the road from Alhama to Pliego, we go up to La Muela heading to the Pino Grande, or Pino Gordo. We follow the Cejo de la Atalaya track and the Rento pathway, and arrive at the spectacular Barrancos de Gebas ravine. This part of the ride is quite technical and has some steep downhill sections with twists and turns, but delivers a thrilling ride through these extraorinary rock formations.
If, by some remote chance it is a rainy day or has rained a lot the previous days, then we should take the service road of the river diversion to the left and up to the Alhama-Pliego road heading to Gebas (to the right). This is due to the ravine area having a clay foundation and you would need us to come and help you detach your bike from the ground!
Stage 2: Gebas to Casas Nuevas
On-Bike Statistics: 32 (Km), 543 (M) elevation
The second section goes from Gebas to Casas Nuevas through the municipalities of Alhama, Mula and Pliego.
It goes past the water infrastructure of the Tajo-Segura River Diversion from Alhama to Pliego, the Caño del Barbol, the springs of Umbría de Sierra Espuña and the ones of Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla. A 32 km itinerary with a cumulative ascent of 543 m to continue stretching your legs and get ready for the two last big stages of this epic mtb tour.
Easy transit pathways, no extreme difficulty
Stage 3: Casas Nuevas to Las Alquerías
On-Bike Statistics: 36 (Km), 1,400 (M) elevation
Section 3 of the route goes from Casas Nuevas to Las Alquerías through some emblematic areas of the Park, such as Collado del Portillo, Malvariche, Pedro López slope, Collado Humero, Camino del Pinillo, La Carrasca House and Spring and Purgatorio houses.
This is a more demanding itinerary, with a route of 36 km and a cumulative ascent of 1,400 m. In this stage you will definitely get ready for the fourth stage, which is the last and the BIG Stage of the itinerary. When you arrive at Malvariche, just lean your bike against the fence surrounding the pond and sit down facing the House, under the Pine Tree for some rest. The time has come for the almost 8 km ascent to Collado Humero, of about 1,400 m. Take it easy because there are still some steep slopes left along the route.
Stage 4: Las Alquerías to El Berro
On-Bike Statistics: 53 (Km), 1,300 (M) elevation
The fourth and final section goes from Las Alquerías back to the community of El Berro, through some pathways and tracks such as Algarrobo, Campix, Paredes del Leyva –Cejo de Valdecanales– and Barranco de la Hoz.
It goes past Fuente del Hilo, La Perdiz, Senda de los Dinosaurios suspension bridge, Fuente Blanca and Prado Mayor; then it descends towards El Berro delivering spectacular views of the impressive Barranco de la Hoz ravine, which we passed at Umbría de Sierra Espuña in section 2.
We head to Casas Nuevas– and continue the descent along the road to Fuente Dueñas. Also a very demanding section, with 53 km, that is to say, more kilometres than any of the other stages; still, it has a cumulative ascent under 1,300 m.
The finish line is near and you will soon wear the official Espubike Challenge jersey!
The last day of your week is a free day, you can relax around the hotel or in the village of El Berros. Or you may choose to go exploring on one of the small circular MTB trails or even go for a hike in the nearby area, there are some great routes and beautiful scenery to take in.
Whatever your fancy please let us know if you would like us to arrange anything special for you and your group with regards to excursions and trips.
We are sure you will have a great week in Sierra Espuna.
